Carnatic Music

The Violin in
Carnatic Music

A Western instrument that became central to South Indian classical music.

Carnatic music is the classical tradition of southern India. The violin arrived from Europe in the late eighteenth century and, within a generation, became one of its central instruments — the standard partner to the voice in concert, and a solo instrument in its own right.

How the violin came to Carnatic music

The violin reached India around 1790. It was adapted to Carnatic music by Baluswami Dikshitar (1786–1859), brother of the composer Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the trinity of Carnatic composers. Baluswami trained on the Western violin and then began playing Indian music on it; he is regarded as the father of Indian classical violin.

What made the instrument take hold so quickly was its capacity for gamaka — the glides and oscillations between and around notes that carry the meaning of a raga. On a fretless, bowed string these are not an effect to be worked around but the instrument’s natural behaviour, which is why the violin became the standard accompaniment to the voice.

The Differences

Same Instrument, Different Practice

A Carnatic violin is a violin. What changes is how it is tuned, how it is held and what the player asks of it.

Tuning

Tuned in a relative system rather than to fixed pitches. The four strings are set as Sa–Pa–Sa–Pa — two pairs an octave apart — instead of the Western fifths, and the whole instrument is pitched to suit the singer it accompanies.

Posture

Played sitting cross-legged on the floor. The scroll rests on the right ankle and the tailpiece sits at the collarbone, so the instrument is supported at both ends and the left hand is free to slide the full length of the string.

Gamaka

Ornament is not decoration added to a melody — it is the melody. Continuous movement between microtones is what identifies a raga, and it shapes fingering, bowing and vibrato quite differently from Western technique.

Role in concert

The violin most often accompanies a singer, shadowing and answering the voice in real time, and takes solo passages of its own. It also appears in duet and as a lead instrument.

Instruments for Carnatic study

Because the instrument itself is the same, everything we do for a Western student applies equally to a Carnatic one. Our rental program covers the full range of sizes, we fit and adjust instruments in the shop, and our repair bench handles setup, bridge and soundpost work, and bow rehairing.

Sizing works the same way too — measured by arm length, with free exchanges as a student grows. If you are starting a child on Carnatic violin and are not sure what size to begin with, call the shop and we will work it out with you.
